Happy Black History Month! To celebrate, I'm featuring one of my new fave Black-owned businesses in the heart of Jackson Ward. šŸ’› Buna Kurs (@bunakursrva) is an authentic Ethiopian cafe that recently opened last October in the former Saadia’s Juicebox space. ā€œBunaā€ literally translates to coffee and ā€œKursā€ means breakfast so the menu fittingly aims to serve a bit of each! ā˜•ļø I had a splendid experience and let me just say there’s a reason they have a 5āļø Google review!

I haven’t had Ethiopian food in years and had never tried Ethiopian breakfast food before so I opted for the Breakfast Combo so I could try a little bit of everything. It came with the injera fir fir (left), kinche (middle), and egg silsi (right) on a large plate with a basket of injera on the side. The egg silsi was definitely my favorite of the three and I’ve been thinking about it every day since. 🤤 It was a huge portion for the price and great for sharing with the table as well. Also pictured is the Awaze Tibs served with injera, Spiced Chai Frappe with a shot of expresso, and Shai Bekimem tea. FYI, Buna Kurs has ample options for vegetarians and vegans so check them out if that refers to you! 🌱

Buna Kurs is great for any scenario: you can order by phone for quick takeout, eat in for brunch with a friend, or order a coffee and get some remote work/studying done. šŸ‘©ā€šŸ’» The interior is comfy and quiet with tons of natural light so it’s the perfect place to ā€˜work from home.’ Overall, Buna Kurs was a great introduction to Ethiopian breakfast for me and I will surely be back soon to try a lunch sandwich or salad! šŸ„—

I would 100% recommend this coffee/breakfast spot to anyone open to trying nontraditional cafe fare because I promise the menu options at Buna Kurs are ones you won’t find anywhere else in Richmond (not even at other Ethiopian spots)! šŸ¤ÆšŸ’Æ
