A SpecTACOlar National Taco Day And Taco Tuesday

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

National Taco Day x Taco Tuesday calls for some BIG taco energy! 🌮💀🎉🤠🪅 Blue Habanero (@bluehabanero_rva) opened this past spring in The Fan at the old Strawberry Street Cafe location. 🍓 It is the third restaurant of a small chain that started out of Cleveland, OH and is known for its street style tacos and wide varieties of margaritas. The owner, Rafael Ayala, wanted to bring Blue Habanero to Richmond because of his roots growing up here as a child and family connections in the area; the empty location on Strawberry Street just worked perfectly for his vision and with how upbeat and busy it was when I went, I take that as a sign his restaurant concept was a success! 🙌

For dinner, I tried the signature Street Tacos on corn tortillas with ribeye steak, chorizo, pineapple, onion, and cilantro. I’m not typically a fan of pineapple topping on foods (pizza, tacos, etc.), so I was pleasantly surprised by how well the sweetness of the pineapple complimented the savory meat flavors.🍍The corn tortillas didn’t hold up until the end of the meal but it didn’t matter because I used my fork to DEVOUR whatever taco filling fell out. Also pictured are the Quesabirria Tacos with shredded beef, queso, and delicious consome for dipping. 😋 I get birria tacos everywhere I see it on the menu and these certainly did not disappoint! Each meal included a side so I tried the Mexican rice and refried beans which were both solid. 🤌

For drinks, we ordered the Margarita Flight so we could try out three of their many unique margarita flavors.🍹 For $14, this is definitely the best deal in my opinion so you can sample several flavors instead of getting stuck with one you don’t like. My favorites in order were Mango, Guava, and Octopus (like pina colada but with tequila) but my friend liked the complete reverse, so their flavors really cater to every type of taste palette! 👅

Blue Habanero doesn’t accept reservations, but I showed up around 5:15PM on a Saturday and was able to be seated right away (they say 7-9PM are their busiest hours). It was extremely busy when I went and I was worried how it would affect our service, however, all the staff were diligent and attentive and the food/drinks came out within MINUTES…best service ever!

Now go celebrate #NationalTacoDay at Blue Habanero and enjoy some tacos all day until 10PM (happy hour from 2-6PM)! 🍻 Don’t forget dessert afterwards next door at @scoop.rva! 🍨
