It’s about time for another med school update now that I’ve completed my M1 year and will start M2 on Monday! 👩🏽⚕️ This past semester has been beyond my wildest dreams. I joined the I2CRP honors program, focusing on providing care for underserved communities, became more involved with leadership and research, and attended various conferences where I gained invaluable knowledge.
Here’s a glimpse of my past few months:
🏛️ AMA MAC Conference in DC // I traveled to Capitol Hill for spring break in March. It was incredible speaking with lawmakers, including my representative Jennifer McClellan. I advocated for increased access to treatment for substance use disorder, more residency training slots, and lower prescription drug costs.
🏙️ AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago // As VCU’s delegate, I voted on important issues like minimizing the pink tax and increasing healthcare access for gender diverse incarcerated individuals.
👩🏽⚕️ White Coat Lobby Days with MSV // On Valentines Day, I visited the Richmond General Assembly building to meet with legislators, advocating for increased Medicaid reimbursement rates, the physician loan repayment program, and expanding SafeHaven.
🦵 UVA Intro to Ortho Conference // In April, I learned how to use Stryker surgical saws and drills. This experience gave me hands-on practice with various procedures and an in-depth look into the foot/ankle subspecialty.
💡 LCME Site Visit // I served as the M1 LCME representative alongside leaders from upper classes during VCU’s official LCME site visit in February. We recently found out that VCU SOM received full accreditation!
💉 VAFP Choose VA Conference // In May, I attended a family medicine conference in Glen Allen, participating in a cast workshop and practicing knee and shoulder injections.
I’m immensely grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had to explore medicine and public health outside of classes this semester! These experiences have solidified my passion for advocating for patients, physicians, and communities. Med school has been incredibly rewarding so far, and I can’t wait to see what the next semester brings! 🤗
